How to Prepare Your Home for Real Estate Photography in Sydney

A practical room-by-room guide to preparing a Sydney home so real estate photos look clean, bright, and campaign-ready.

First impressions matter and in Sydney's competitive real estate market, your listing photos are often the very first thing a buyer sees. Whether you're selling or renting out any property anywhere in Sydney, the way your property is presented on camera can make or break a buyer's interest before they ever step through the front door.

Professional real estate photography can elevate almost any home, but preparation is what separates a good result from a great one. Here's how to get your property shoot-ready.

Start Outside: Kerb Appeal Counts

The exterior shot is typically the hero image of any listing. Before your photographer arrives:

  • Mow the lawn, edge the garden beds, and remove any dead plants.
  • Clean the driveway and pathways pressure washing makes a big difference.
  • Move bins, cars, hoses, and any clutter out of the frame.
  • Wipe down the front door, clean windows, and consider adding a fresh pot plant or two for colour.

If you're shooting in summer, water the lawn the evening before for that lush, green look.

Declutter Every Room

Camera lenses make spaces look smaller than they are, and clutter makes that worse. Go through each room and remove anything that doesn't need to be there:

  • Clear kitchen benchtops leave out one or two styled items at most (a fruit bowl, a good coffee machine).
  • Remove fridge magnets, mail, and personal photos.
  • Tidy bedroom surfaces and hide cords from bedside lamps and phone chargers.
  • Clear bathroom counters toothbrushes, shampoo bottles, and toiletries should be stored away.
  • Organise bookshelves and remove excess items from living room surfaces.

Think of it this way: buyers should be picturing themselves in the space, not trying to see past your belongings.

Deep Clean Everything

A professional lens picks up dust, smudges, and grime that you might not notice day-to-day. Before the shoot:

  • Clean all windows, inside and out.
  • Wipe down mirrors and glass surfaces.
  • Mop floors and steam carpets if needed.
  • Clean kitchen appliances and make sure stovetop burners are spotless.
  • Scrub bathrooms tiles, grout, and fixtures should shine.

For properties with outdoor entertaining areas, clean the BBQ, sweep the deck, and set the outdoor table.

Let the Light In

Natural light is every photographer's best friend. On the day of the shoot:

  • Open all curtains and blinds to their fullest.
  • Replace any blown globes dark corners stand out on camera.
  • Turn on all lights in darker rooms, including under-cabinet kitchen lighting.
  • Clean ceiling fan blades they're very visible in wide-angle shots.

If your home has a great view of Sydney Harbour, the bush, or even just a nice garden make sure windows are clean and the view isn't blocked by anything.

Style, Don't Overdo It

You don't need a professional stylist to make your home look its best. A few simple touches go a long way:

  • Fresh white towels folded neatly in bathrooms.
  • A bunch of flowers on the kitchen bench or dining table.
  • Cushions plumped and throws arranged on sofas.
  • Beds made with crisp, wrinkle-free linen.
  • Dining table set with simple place settings.

Keep colour schemes neutral and consistent this helps photos feel cohesive across the listing.

On the Day: A Few Final Checks

Before the photographer starts shooting, do a final walk-through:

  • Move family photos, personal documents, and anything private.
  • Park all cars off the property.
  • Make sure all toilet lids are down.
  • Close all internal doors unless your photographer advises otherwise.
